Sea incursion: Reps Committee Chair assures of urgent attention
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Rep. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has promised to urgently intervene in the recurrent sea incursion that has overtime rendered residents in Ilaje Local Government Area homeless.
In a statement on Monday by his Special Adviser on New Media, Alao Babatunde, the legislator expressed sympathy with victims of the incident.
There have been wide reports of ocean surge that has led to lost of farmland measuring about 20 kilometres to the sea.
The incident which occurred in the early hours of Saturday reportedly rendered over 2000 residents homeless in Ayetoro community in the oil-rich region.
The lawmaker who regretted the incident assured that the NDDC would approach the natural disaster with a more drastic measure.
“It’s quite saddening that our people have had to suffer in the past years of an occurrence that could have been better managed.
“As stakeholders in the development of the Niger Delta region, we will not fold our arms while things remain the way they have always been. This is a time a drastic approach was put in place to manage this ugly incident.
“In the coming days, I will engage the management of NDDC on what can urgently be done to salvage the situation.
He urged residents to remain calm as help is on the way.
